SMART repair: scuffs, scratches and minor dents

Localised, colour-matched paint repair carried out at your premises — the alternative to putting a car through a body shop for damage the size of a hand.

What SMART repair actually means

SMART stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Technology. Instead of removing a panel, filling it, and respraying the whole thing in a booth, the repair is confined to the damaged area and the new paint is blended into the surrounding original finish. Done well, the repair disappears; done badly it shows as a patch, which is why preparation and colour matching matter far more than speed.

It suits damage that is cosmetic and localised. It is not a replacement for structural or accident repair.

Bumper scuffs and corner damage

The single most common job we do. Plastic bumpers scuff on posts, bollards and other cars, and because the material flexes, the paint tears and lifts. We sand the damage back, rebuild the profile where plastic has been torn away, prime with a flexible primer, then apply colour and lacquer and blend it out along the panel.

Scratches and stone chips

Light scratches that sit in the lacquer can often be machine polished out. Anything that has cut through to primer or bare metal needs paint, and needs it soon — exposed steel on a door edge or bonnet lip will start to rust. Motorway stone chipping across a bonnet or wing mirror is handled the same way, chip by chip, then flatted and polished so the surface reads flat.

Minor dents

Shallow dents and door dings with the paint intact can usually be worked out and finished on site. Sharp creases, dents on a swage line or panel edge, and anything where the metal has stretched are harder to make invisible; we will tell you honestly what result to expect before starting rather than after.

When a body shop is the right call instead

Send it to a body shop if the damage crosses more than about a third of a panel, if there is structural or chassis damage, if a panel needs replacing or realigning, if there is rust that has eaten through, or if the vehicle is an insurance claim that needs a documented full repair. We would rather point you there than take money for a repair that will not hold up.

How a visit works

Send photos and the registration, we confirm scope and a date, and a technician comes to your dealership, depot or home. Paint is matched to the vehicle's OEM code and checked against the actual panel. Curing is done with a portable lamp, so the car is usable when we leave, and you get before and after photos with digital sign-off.

We need dry conditions and a reasonably sheltered space — a unit, garage or covered forecourt is ideal, though we work outdoors in settled weather.

Send us the damage

A couple of clear photos in daylight and the registration are enough for us to confirm scope. Everything is quoted by enquiry.
